Euler Piruleta Vs. Funnyface's Riddles

Due to your impressive help, the bomb has finally been deactivated. Alas, Euler Piruleta shall be overjoyed and elated. Thousands of “innocent” lives have been saved! But the thing is, when you lead such a reckless life as he does you are never truly safe… and somehow, the evil forces of Funnyface’s mind have teleported Euler into the heart of Galician most terrible nest of Non-living creatures: Pontevedra!!

These non-living creatures are nothing but former humans infected with the tedious TSJ virus, which has been widely spread through the whole region. Euler has only a neoprene suit to protect himself from the bites of such terrible creatures and the possibility of escaping if he manages to solve the two riddles Funnyface has created for him. Try to help him to explain the meaning of these two riddles!

1) “There are 10 kinds of people in the world: those who understand binary code and those who don’t.

2) PREQUEL = SEQUEL - 2

Click here for a printable version. Deadline: Friday the 1st of February!. Send both riddle's explanation to my e-mail :D

If you want to find more about these Galician non-living creatures, have a good laughter, and learn some advice to survive such invasion with just a neoprene suit try and read the wonderful exhilarating Manel Loureiro’s trilogy Apocalipsis Z: A must-read! ^_^

A new "oldie" + "version" for this weekend: Nik Kershaw's The Riddle Vs. Gigi D'Agostino's version:

Finally, Ivan, Jorge, Carlos, Andrea I., Marina and Tania are the ones who solved the previous challenge. One extra positive for you guys! :D

The extra bulletin with exercises for your forthcoming Equations + Systems exam can be downloaded here! The solutions to the first and secord order equations will be uploaded next Friday!

And don't forget to download the exercise 8 we have done with GeoGebra. Remember it's a free software and you can ask me any doubt you may have about it (I will try to help yoy provided I know the answer... hahaha!)

ENJOY!

Euler Piruleta Vs. The Crazy Maths Teacher

Congratulations to all of you who have built your own Origami Twisted Tower!! :D

You are clearly THE BEST!!

Now that it seemed we knew everything related to equations, a new menace is plotting against the life on Earth! This time a Crazy Maths teacher has built an algebraic bomb which has the power to erase every living creature from the surface of our planet. Only a reckless hero as Euler Piruleta has the bravery to try to deactivate it...

The problem is that he needs to get 12 codes which are the solution for some 4th degree equations to deactivate the bomb, but he only studied 2nd order equations in the high school (at this moment, he wishes his former teacher had taught him how to solve more equations, but it is too late..).

Euler needs desperately your help!! Will you help him to solve these 4th degree equations?

We have studied how to solve first and second order equations. Trying to solve a 3rd order equation with a formula may bring about the most terrible operations you have ever imagined, as long as the formulas to get the 3 solutions of an equation like $ax^{3}+bx^{2}+cx+d=0$ (where a, b, c, d are real numbers) are:

It has been proved that there is no possible formula for the general equation of degree 4, but it’s quite interesting that some 4th order equations can be solved easily transforming them into 2nd order equations. These equations are called Biquadratic Equations.

Try to solve the following biquadratic equations to get the codes Euler Piruleta needs to deactivate the bomb. Write the 12 codes you get in the chart below… is the only way of deactivating the bomb!!!

a) $x^{4}-10x^{2}+9=0$                   b) $x^{4}+3x^{2}+2=0$                       c) $4x^{4}-17x^{2}+4=0$

Note: if one code is not a real number, you must enter #.

The instructions to solve these equations can be downloaded here! C'mon, it shouldn't take you any longer than 15 minutes to help poor Euler Piruleta! :D

Deadline: January the 25th. You can either send me an e-mail with the 12 codes or give a handwritten copy next week :)

EXTRA INFORMATION

- Juan has been the winner of the Euler Piruleta's Face contest!! Therefore, he has been awarded with 2 challenge positives!

- Belén, Carlos and Iñaki have been incredible runner-ups, so they have been awarded with 1 challenge positive!

- Iñaki, Jorge, Iván and Tania have a new challenge positive for the Second Order Equations Formula!

- Some music for the weekend: you should know that some of the most famous songs nowadays are versions of songs from the 80's. Here is one fine example

Pitbull feat. Christina Aguileara Vs. A-Ha

I wonder which version you prefer... :P

Euler Piruleta vs. The Abominable Formula

This entry is dedicated to Ivan and Jorge, whose incredible square divisions have utterly delighted me!!! Thank you guys for your imagination!! :D

This is beyond impressive, isn't it????

Now, some reminders:

1) You have until this Sunday to vote for Euler Piruleta's face! Check the previous entries to decide among the candidates.

2) Don't forget that you must bring your Origami Tower by next Tuesday.

Unfortunately, Euler Piruleta didn't receive the help he expected with his last challenge, and he almost found himself absorbed by evil Cell... However, in the last moment, some solutions appeared and he got rid of Cell successfully ^_^ Thanks to Maria, Tania and Marina, Euler Piruleta is back and strong enough to keep on fighting...

This time he has to face the tedious Quadratic Equations' Formula and its plans to make every single student in 3ºESO to fail maths this term... What a rascal!!

Euler Piruleta's only chance is to fully understand where this formula comes from.

Here are the instructions to help poor Euler solving this challenge. You have until next Friday to get the solution. Since this challenge requires writing math symbols, your solutions should be handed to me in class handwritten.

Good luck!!

These two songs are from a previous entry which I think most of you haven't read :P So, enjoy with OK Go and their wonderful choreographies!

OK GO "A million ways"

OK GO "Here it goes again"

Christmas Exercises - Day 3

Here you are the whole set of solutions for the Christmas Exercises ;)

1) Don't forget to vote for Euler Piruleta's face you like the most (Entry from the 20th of December)
2) Remember you have an ordinary challenge: "The Colour Map Problem" (Entry from the 23rd of December)

And finally, I very much hope you don't feel like this little girl about the end of your holidays... XD Hahaha...
